Email #29 - Earthquake? Bring it on!

Are we earthquake ready? You bet. We got Shear Wall!

Look at this hummer. It's a new shear wall oriented east-west on the first floor. The front door is just out of the picture on the left. This shear wall is contiguous with similar new walls on the floors above and below.

On the right you can see that the existing perimeter walls have been shotcreted in the Construction Management offices. These seismic upgrades are the fundamental reason that the building is being renovated.

This week they will finish shotcreting the perimeter walls on the first floor. Then beginning Oct. 2 they'll start on the top floor. So next week is the last week you'll be able to see the historic red brick still exposed inside the building.

Therefore, I'm going to organize one more tour of the building before school starts. It's now scheduled for Tues. Sept. 26 starting at 2:30 pm sharp. Patrick Brown of UW Capitol Projects will be the tour guide.

This tour will be limited to 20 people: 2 people from Mithun Architects + the first 18 people to respond to this email (but not those who came on the Sept. 1 tour). You must wear HARD BOOTS and a hardhat.  If you don't have a hardhat, you can pick one up in the Dean's office before the tour. A few will be available at the site too, plus other safety equipment. Please arrive by 2:20 pm so you can be outfitted with the required safety equipment. We'll start on time. Don't be late! You won't get in.

Let me know if you're interested.
