Email #64 - Steam Pipe Exits Building

Here is where the steam pipe exits the building at the west end of the ground floor. It goes vertical through the floor and then underground to the Guthrie Annex Buildings to the west. The old steam pipe at this location went through the wall on the left and then went vertical & underground outside Architecture Hall. (Not. See #71). I doubt that any of you remember that. I certainly don't.

Except for being slightly warmer at the bend on top, the new pipe shown here has the same temperature as the surrounding surfaces. Again, the insulation seems to be working.

Desaturated Color

As a photographer who has long worked in black & white, it has taken a while for me to adjust to digital color. With lots of different light sources on the site, the colors can be all over the map and distracting! Therefore, I've grown to like desaturating color in Photoshop because it abstracts the image similar to b&w while retaining some of the color information, which can be helpful.

Actually, in the attached photo I totally desaturated all colors except the steam pipe, the yellow ladder and the blue logos on the pajamas.

Last spring when I was first learning Photoshop, I was absolutely thrilled to turn light skies to jet black! Then recent M.Arch. graduate Evan Bourquard  saw what I was doing and sternly admonished me: "Photoshop is NOT a toy!"

Since then I retreated into the closet with Photoshop color, but now I'm back out again with the "desaturated" look, as in the Pajama Party series and other photos I've sent. Evan, what do you think of these?
