The Seattle-based architectural firm Hutchison & Maul Architecture has been selected by the Architectural League NY as a 2009 Emerging Voice. Principals Robert Hutchison (MArch 1996) and Tom Maul (MArch 1996) will travel to New York this month to participate in the lecture series. The Architectural League created the annual Emerging Voices lecture series in 1982 to recognize and encourage architects who are beginning to achieve prominence in the profession. The series focuses primarily on built work, at a variety of scales, and is structured to reflect the diversity of contemporary practice–geographically, stylistically, and ideologically. Hutchison & Maul Architecture was founded by in 2001 by Hutchison and Maul, who are part-time faculty in CBE’s Department of Architecture.

Exploring space and form through the medium of envelope, Hutchison & Maul’s designs are characterized by site-specific solutions which encompass functionality and efficiency through the use of a limited material palette, and a focus on one or two primary architectural elements. The firm performs work at all scales, from small art studios and residences to large institutional buildings and conceptual master plans.

Hutchison currently sits on the boards of Space.City, a Seattle-based organization dedicated to the discussion of art, architecture and urbanism; and 4Culture, the cultural services agency for King County, Washington. Maul sits on AIA Seattle’s Committee on Design.

Past participants of the Emerging Voice award have included Bob Hull from the The Miller/Hull Partnership, Tom Kundig from Olsen Sundburg Kundig Allen, and Steven Holl from Steven Holl Architects.
