Urban growth and decline focus of planning symposium

Thursday March 2009

The 8th International Symposium on Urban Planning and Environment will take place in Kaiserslautern, Germany, March 23 – 26, 2009. More than 200 people are registered to attend and present more than 130 papers on the conference theme, “Parallel Patterns of Urban Growth and Decline,” the phenomena of growing urban regions and declining cities seen throughout western and central Europe, North America, Japan, China and elsewhere. These symposiums are widely regarded as the prime venue for public officials, researchers, and representatives from NGOs to meet to exchange information and experience on efforts to implement policies addressing sustainable urban development. Urban Design and Planning Professor Don Miller is founder and the chair of the International Urban Planning and Environment Association, which has organized these international symposiums every year or two beginning with Seattle in 1994. UPE7 took place in Bangkok two years ago, and plans are under way for UPE9 in southern China.
