UW CAUP students take second place in Skanska's University Grant Project Competition
Monday March 2008As per a press release dated March 13th, Skanska announced the winners of their Univeristy Grant Project Competition. This is the third year that teams from the University of Washington have entered, and this year, one of those teams took home second place, a $3,000 grant. The three person team met the challenge of designing the ideal emergency department/healthcare facility dealing with an infectious disease outbreak. As part of their proposed solution, the UW team converted shipping containers - found in abundance, and inexpensive - into mobile units, equipped with all necessary supplies that can be readily shipped and set up anywhere in the world. The added bonus: not only would these units provide the emergency services required by hospitals, but would additionally provide space for overflow patients when not used for infectious disease control. A second team from the UW also finished in the top five.
The first place grant was awarded to a team from BYU who also designed to the controlling infectious disease scenario. Third place also went to another BYU team whose design was based upon creating the ideal singe-patient room.
