Lab & Studios
CBE offers an extensive collection of software in the College's labs and studios. You can look up specific software titles here.
Application Server
Several software titles are available to you remotely via the Citrix Application Server. These titles include:
- ArcGIS
- Argus
- @Risk
- Primavera
Please see our Application Server page for more details.
Smartboard Drivers, Smart Notebook
You can use any of CBE's Smartboards just as you would use a standard projector - without installing any additional software. But if you want to take advantage of the Smartboard's touch-panel interface and electronic markers, you'll need to install the driver software for your operating system.
If you want to use the extended features of the Smartboard - like notebook creation and annotation functions - you'll need to install the Smart Notebook software for your system in addition to the Smart driver. Links to all of these are available here:
| package | filename / link | size |
|---|---|---|
| Smart drivers - Windows | smartdrivers-10.6SP2-windows.exe | 108 MB |
| Smart Notebook - Windows | smartnotebooksetup-10.6SP1-windows.exe | 212 MB |
| Smart drivers - Mac | smartdrivers-10.6SP2-mac.dmg | 172 MB |
| Smart Notebook - Mac | smartnotebooksetup-10.6SP3-mac.dmg | 272 MB |
| Getting Started Guide | CBE-smartboard.pdf | 187 KB |
Note that the driver is generally sufficient for what folks want to do.
Antivirus and Utility Software
UW-IT's Tools for Safe and Secure Computing page gives you quick access to a basic set of software tools for fighting viruses, doing secure file transfer and terminal sessions, and other common tasks. All of the tools are available at no cost to you, either because they are freeware or because the UW has paid for the right for you to use them.

The UW Bookstore offers Adobe software at a substantial discount to UW students, faculty, and staff. For more information, and to purchase software, please see the UW Bookstore (click on the "Tech Center" link on their main page):
form•Z / bonzai3d (AutoDesSys)
form•Z is a general purpose solid and surface modeler with an extensive set of 2D/3D form manipulating and sculpting tools, as well as sophisticated rendering capabilities.
bonzai3d is an easy to use 3D modeler optimized for conceptual design and for quickly sketching 3D ideas that can be transformed into robust geometries.
CBE participates in a program through which students may purchase time-limited Mac or PC versions of form•Z and bonzai3d for a modest fee (proof of enrollment is required). For more information (including relevant forms and online ordering instructions), please see:
www.formz.com/academic/academic.html
As the Principal Investigator of the form•Z Joint Study Program for CBE, Brian Johnson provides local support and bug reporting for students using the software.
Download the Free or Pro version of Sketchup. Students may purchase a time-limited version of Sketchup Pro for $49 from this site.
Kerkythea is a standalone renderer generally used in conjunction with SketchUp. It incorporates physically accurate materials and lights, aiming for the best quality rendering in the most efficient timeframe. The target of Kerkythea is to simplify the task of quality rendering by providing the necessary tools to automate scene setup, such as staging using the GL real-time viewer, material editor, general/render settings editors, etc., under a common interface.
Energy-10 (NREL)
Energy-10 is a software tool for designing low-energy buildings. Energy-10 integrates daylighting, passive solar heating, and low-energy cooling strategies with energy-efficient shell design and mechanical equipment. It enables designers to make good decisions about energy efficiency early in the design process. The program is geared toward buildings of 10,000 square feet or less.

ArcGIS (ESRI)
UW students enrolled in GIS courses may acquire ESRI software for use on personal computers on a one-year time out license. The software must be requested through a faculty member who is teaching a GIS course in which the student is enrolled.
Autodesk Software (Autodesk)
The Autodesk Student Engineering & Design Community Program, open to all students, staff and faculty at the UW, provides networking, employment opportunities and free software. Most Autodesk software (including Revit and Architecture) is available on a one-year time out license through this program.
Register for the program at: students.autodesk.com
Microsoft Student Option
All UW-Seattle students who are either currently enrolled or graduated the previous quarter, and who pay the Student Technology Fee are eligible to download a free copy of Microsoft Windows 7 and Microsoft Office. Students will be required to use their UW NetID and password for validation.
