Printing: How to use Dawg-Prints

What is this?

Through an agreement with UW Publications Services, we have one dawg-print self-serve printing station in the College. This station is in the Digital Commons. The Digital Commons station has both black & white and color laser printers, both of which can print either letter or tabloid.

You can print to a self-serve printing station from Macintosh and Windows computers in the CAUP computing labs, and from the loaner computers that students can check out from the Architecture and Urban Planning Library.

Since the printers are in the labs, you can get your output whenever the lab is open (and, if you have card access, anytime at all).

Faculty, Staff and Students can use their Husky Card to pay for all Dawg-Print services. It's easy to add value to your Husky Card at http://hfs.washington.edu/husky_card or visit the Husky Card Office located in Odegaard, Husky Card station in the HUB or Allen North Lobby.

Departments:
With a Departmental Husky Card your staff can purchase Dawg-Prints services at any of our locations across campus. Housing and Food Services (HFS) can close your account if your card is ever lost or stolen and can even restrict where your card is accepted. You also have the ability add value to your Departmental Husky Card from your computer at any time and monitor online when and where the card is used. To request a Departmental Husky Card, contact HFS at huskycrd@u.washington.edu. Please include your budget information, the number of cards you would like issued, and the monetary value on each card. HFS will process your request and contact you when the cards are ready.

Visitors:
If you are visiting campus and don't have a Husky Card, purchase a Dawg-Prints Card.

A current list of copy centers, including hours, phone numbers, and locations, is available at:

http://www.washington.edu/admin/pubserv/copy/map/index.html

(Note that it would be prudent to call first, to verify both that they're open, and that they are able to accept UW Budget Numbers as payment for copy cards.)

What printers are available?

Note that the name of each printer describes its type (B&W, Color) and its location (Digital Commons, Architecture and Urban Planning Library).

The printer in the AUP Library is only available from the CAUP Student Computing Loaner Program laptops.

B&W Digital Commons letter (8.5 x 11) Single-Sided $0.12 / page

How do I use this thing - Mac?

To print, first do these things at this computer:

  1. You'll need to select the paper size, since the printers support both Letter (8.5x11) and Tabloid (11x17) paper. To select the size, choose Page Setup under the File menu.
  2. Verify that the printer name shown in the "Format for:" field is the one you want to print to. If the "Paper:" field doesn't show the size you want to use, click it to get a list of sizes. Valid sizes for our printers are: 8.5x11, 11x17, Letter (same as 8.5x11), or Tabloid (same as 11x17). Select one of the valid sizes, then click OK. Please do not select the Tabloid Extra or 12x18 sizes (if they appear), as they will confuse the printer.
  3. Now print as you normally would, by selecting Print under your application's File menu.
  4. After you issue a print command, you'll get two dialog boxes asking for information that the print server will use to uniquely identify your print job. The identifying information will appear on a list of jobs ready to print on the Release Station next to the relevant printer.
  5. The first dialog box asks for your name. Enter a word or two (it doesn't really have to be your name), and press the Enter key or click the Next button.
  6. The second dialog box asks for some identifier for your document. Enter something meaningful to you, and press the Enter key or click the OK button.

Then do these things at the Release Station next to the printer:

  1. Insert your Husky Card into the card reader. The Card reader should display the current value of the card.
  2. The release station screen will take a few seconds to display all the print jobs in queue for this station. Click on your job to highlight your selection. To select multiple print jobs, hold down the <ctrl> key while clicking on each selection.
  3. The total cost and the number of pages should be displayed at the bottom of the screen.
  4. If the Husky Card has insufficient funds to complete the transaction, you must add value to your husky card here http://hfs.washington.edu/husky_card or visit the Husky Card Office located in Odegaard, Husky Card station in the HUB or Allen North Lobby.
  5. To release your print job(s), click on the PRINT button.
  6. When you are finished printing, or if you decide not to print the selected job(s), click on the EXIT button and remove your card from the card reader.

Print jobs remain in the Release Station queue for 24 hours, after which they are automatically deleted.

How do I use this thing - Windows?

To print, first do these things at this computer:

  1. Print as you normally would, by selecting Print under your application's File menu. In the print dialog box, verify that the printer name selected is the one you wish to print to. If you're printing from AutoCAD, you might want to have a look at How to Print from AutoCAD in CAUP for help.
  2. Also in the print dialog box, you'll need to select the paper size you want to use, since these printers support both letter and tabloid sizes.):
    • Click the Properties button next to the name of the printer in the print dialog box, then the Advanced button on the Paper/Quality tab.
    • In the resulting window, click the field next to Paper Size and select either Letter (8.5x11) or Tabloid (11x17). Please do not select the Tabloid Extra or 12x18 sizes (if they appear), as they will confuse the printer.
    • Click OK to close the Advanced window; click OK to close the Properties window; click OK to print.
  3. After you issue a print command, you'll get two dialog boxes asking for information that the print server will use to uniquely identify your print job. The identifying information will appear on a list of jobs ready to print on the Release Station next to the relevant printer. Note that if you print to the "Gould_Hall" printer, your print job will be available at both Gould Hall release stations - so you can print it out at whatever station is most convenient for you.
  4. The first dialog box asks for your name. Enter a word or two (it doesn't really have to be your name), and press the Enter key or click the Next button.
