Facilities: CAUP Computing Lab Policies

By using the CAUP Computing Lab facilities, lab patrons agree to abide by all Lab Policies. Lab patrons are also expected to know the rules governing the appropriate use of the University's network. For more information, please see "Knowing the Rules". Misuse of facilities and failure to abide by all lab and network use policies will result in the loss of lab privileges. Questions about these policies or about the CAUP Computing Lab facilities may be directed to caup@u.washington.edu.

General Usage

  • The CAUP Open Computing lab (Digital Commons) is open to all students, faculty and staff of the University of Washington College of Architecture and Urban Planning.
  • Food, beverages and smoking are not permitted in the labs. Tables are available outside each lab for you to leave your food and drink while you are in the lab.
  • The computing labs are for educational use only, and must not be used for commercial purposes.
  • Labs may be reserved for classes or scheduled maintenance. Please see "Classroom Scheduling Policies and Procedures" for reservation information.
  • Individual computer stations with software or hardware that is not commonly available may be reserved by students doing coursework that specifically requires the use of these resources. There is a reservation signup sheet at each of these special stations where you can sign up for time (up to two hours per day) and get more details.
  • Aside from these two reservation processes, computer stations are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Email, web browsing, and other activities not directly related to school work have the lowest priority. People engaging in these activities must give up their computers to those doing school work when the lab is busy or a reservation is in effect.
  • Anyone found destroying or defacing CAUP property will be reported to the authorities and fined for damage.
  • The College of Architecture and Urban Planning does not bear responsibility for loss or damage of data or disks that occurs in our labs. Patrons accept the risk that data can be irrecoverably lost, so be sure to make multiple copies of your data on multiple disks.
  • Please clean up after yourself. Put paper in the appropriate recycle container. Straighten the keyboard and mouse. Push your chair in. When you leave your workstation, leave it looking how you would like to find it. If you leave after 5pm or on weekends or holidays, please shut down the computer to save energy!
  • All patrons must be aware of and abide by all federal copyright laws. See the "UW Copyright Information Page" for details.
  • The College of Architecture and Urban Planning is not responsible for any lost or stolen items. The lost and found is located in Gould Hall room 224. Lost and found information can be obtained in person. It will not be released over the phone.

Security

  • If you are working late or on weekends / holidays, please be aware of your surroundings. If you feel uncomfortable or suspicious about people or activity around you, use the lab phone (there's one in each Open Computing lab) to call UW Police at 9-911.
  • If you are the last one to leave a lab after 5pm or anytime on weekends / holidays, please shut the door and make sure that it is locked. Also please shut down your computer to save energy. If you are a CAUP student, faculty or staff member, your Husky Card may be used to gain access to any of the CAUP Open Computing labs.

Hard Disk Space

  • While you are using one of the lab computers, you may store files temporarily in the Documents folders or DATA partitions on that computer. Please delete files before you leave.
  • During routine maintenance or to fix problems, computing staff may delete files from the Documents folders or DATA partitions without warning. Therefore, you should always store your files on your own disks, or transfer them to your space on dante. There is NO guarantee that files stored on the lab computers' hard disks will remain available.
