CEP 460 Projects - Class of 2008

In CEP 460, Planning in Context, CEP seniors are put into small groups and matched with a client, often from the public or non-profit sector. The students plan a quarter-long project that will provide valuable assistance to their client, ending in a final product that meets high standards of quality and professionalism.

The Aurora Ave Team
Jason Airey, Leea Brady, Adam Brown, Noa Ginger, Trisha Rasmussen and Mia Thompson

The Aurora Ave Team worked with the Mayor’s Office and a task force of community members to create a document for planning the future growth and development of Aurora Ave between 72nd and 90th. Their tasks have included creating a web page for the community members to utilize for discussion as well as creating and carrying out a survey of interests and concerns for the task force to use in their creation of their action agenda. See their final report (9 MB PDF).

The Centralia Team
Michelle Burce, Dan Ciorba, Thomas Eyler, Erin Harris and Monica Le

The Centralia Team put together a Gateway Plan for the City of Centralia. Centralia’s historic downtown is over a mile from the freeway along an unattractive corridor. Most visitors never make it past the factory outlet mall on the other side of the freeway! Their goal for the project was to help revitalize the Harrison/Main St. corridor that leads visitors to downtown. They did this by making recommendations about redeveloping properties along the corridor; improving the park system along the corridor; making road modifications and improvements to include bicycle lanes; and installing more attractive design elements, street furniture, and clear signage. See their final report (98 MB PDF).

The Food Security Team
Shannon Goodwin, Ruth Lee and Christine Winckler

The Food Security Team compiled a comprehensive issue paper on the topic of food security for the Puget Sound Regional Council. As more jurisdictions realize that something as essential as food should not go unexamined, informational resources are needed to show people new to food issues where to get started. The team conducted research on how food security is being addressed in the four-county Puget Sound Region and what is being done elsewhere to resolve food system issues. See their final report here (1 MB PDF).

The Sustainability Team
Mark Ferrin, Rose Thorton and Regina Wandler

The Sustainability Team worked with the CEP Sustainability Task Force, a newly created SSC-Hearthstone subcommittee. The Task Force’s purpose is to encourage and create sustainability within CEP as a major. Because this was also a 460 project, they were be able to spend more time on facets of the project that would not be well addressed through normal CEP methods. Filling this unique role allowed the Sustainability Team to give the Task Force a base for more self-sustained, supported, and long range projects. Additionally, the project should function as an experiment in new methods that CEP could take advantage of in the future. See their final report here (1 MB PDF).
