Faculty Biography
I am particularly interested in historic urban environments--not those that are maintained as static, sanitized parcels, but rather those that retain complex historic layering while allowing change to occur. In my research I seek to elucidate how preservation and planning can best be integrated to manage such places and foster appreciation for the everyday environments that people call home. I am of the opinion that history, like ecology, needs to be integrated with planning in order to achieve overall sustainability in urban areas. I have a variety of other reserch interests, including cultural landscapes (particularly those managed by the National Park Service), mulitcultural planning for diverse neighborhoods, experiences of immigrant communities (especially South Asians in the Pacific NW), and crime prevention through environmental design, particulary in terms of managing and redeveloping urban parks while maintaining their uniqueness.
