My research focuses on the role of housing in the social and economic well-being of low-income people. Currently much of my research focuses on the HOPE VI program, where I am evaluating whether redevelopment has positive or negative impacts on both residents who return to the new site and those who move away. I am also trying to understand why residents of color who move away end up living in more racially segregated neighborhoods--are their choices governed by constraint or desire? These questions are fundamentally about the justice of programs that seek to house the poorest of the poor, and thus focus on the part of the department’s mission to make urban regions just.
