This thesis explores cultural and generational perceptions of
place and play at the public housing site Hauiki Hale in Honolulu, Hawaii, as
a catalyst to build community. The study site was chosen due various reasons:
a lacking sense of community, the diversity of cultures living in this shared
setting, availability of space for development of a community facility, and
my personal connection to the Kalihi neighborhood. Using a community design
methodology, the issues within the Hauiki community and common values among
the residents are identified. Based on these findings I identify design opportunities
that could be used to enhance a sense of place and enrich opportunities for
play in fostering a sense of community. These design ideas are intended to spark
dialogue on what is most needed in the community's physical form and engage
the Hauiki community members in a community design effort.
