Turning Gray Space into Green Space: Integrating Stormwater with Urban Design -
by Kevin Perry (ASLA, Nevue Ngan Associates, Portland, Oregon)

ABSTRACT
Green streets and rain gardens used for stormwater management are quickly becoming popular throughout the United States and international community.
Join a national leader in sustainable stormwater design for a discussion on how Portland is retrofitting the urban environment by transforming “gray space” into “green space” with innovative and sustainable techniques for
managing urban stormwater runoff. Many of Portland’s most prominent green street and urban rain garden projects will be highlighted within the presentation including the: SW 12th Avenue Green Street, NE Siskiyou Green Street, Glencoe Elementary School Rain Garden, Mt. Tabor Middle School Rain Garden, and other projects that exemplify sustainable stormwater design. This presentation will demonstrate how streets and urban spaces can be successfully redesigned to integrate sustainable stormwater management within the urban fabric.
