Jeffrey Karl Ochsner, FAIA is a Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Washington, where he has taught since 1988 in the areas of architectural design, architectural history, urban design, and historic preservation. He currently serves as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Architecture & Urban Planning.
Professor Ochsner is author of H. H. Richardson: Complete Architectural Works (1982), editor and co-author of Shaping Seattle Architecture: A Historical Guide to the Architects (1994), and co-author of Distant Corner: Seattle Architects and the Legacy of H. H. Richardson (2003). His new book, Lionel H. Pries, Architect, Artist, Educator: From Arts & Crafts to Modern Architecture, was published by the University of Washington Press in December 2007.
Lionel H. "Spike" Pries (1897-1968) is considered among the most influential teachers of architecture and design at the University of Washington. Minoru Yamasaki, Perry Johanson, A. Q. Jones, George ("Pete") Wimberly, Victor Steinbrueck, Paul Kirk, Roland Terry, Fred Bassetti, Alan Liddle, Wendell Lovett, Keith Kolb, Dan Streissguth, and many other twentieth-century architects were inspired by Pries, whose artistic approach to design helped shape the development of Modernism in Northwest architecture. Professor Ochsner's talk, "Inspiring Design: Lionel H. Pries as Architect and Teacher," will address Pries's teaching career at the University of Washington from 1928 to 1958 and will explore Pries's influence on his students.
