Introduction
The College of Architecture and Urban Planning is a multi-discipline unit with faculty and students engaged in a wide range of research or creative activity. The University of Washington recognizes and supports the diversity of research activities as indicated by this passage from the University of Washington Handbook:
"The creative function of a university requires faculty devoted to inquiry and research, whose attainment may be in the realm of scholarly investigation, in constructive composition, creative writing, or original design in engineering and architecture. While numbers (publications, grant dollars, students) provide some measure of such accomplishment, more important is the quality of the faculty member's published or other creative work." (See University of Washington Handbook, Vol. II, Chapter 24, Section 24-32).
Faculty in the College of Architecture and Urban Planning have a strong record of production in funded and unfunded research, scholarly investigation, and creative professional practice.
Many College faculty collaborate on funded research projects through various Centers, Institutes and Labs, and others pursue funded research on an individual basis. Other faculty may pursue scholarly investigations independantly with limited external funding. As is typical in professional schools and colleges across the University, many faculty are engaged in professional practice, applying their expertise to real-world problems.
