Center for Italian Studies
The College maintains a permanent year-round facility in Rome. Studio classroom spaces, as well as limited living accommodations for visiting scholars participating in Italian studies, are provided in the Palazzo Pio on the Campo Dei Fiori. A library shared with the Department of Classics, a substantial slide collection, and a resident support staff are accessible to students. The Palazzo Pio is arranged to enhance interaction among students from the University and students from other institutions, together with practicing professionals residing in or visiting Rome. Several major universities regularly share studio crits and lectures with College staff members in a spirit of cooperation.

Remote Sensing Applications Laboratory
Frank Westerlund, Director The Remote Sensing Applications Laboratory (RSAL) has as its primary mission the development of applications for information produced by remote sensing technology, which includes aerial photography and systems, such as the Landsat and SPOT satellites. RSAL maintains an extensive current and historical archive of these types of data for the Puget Sound area in the Pacific Northwest and beyond, as well as a collection of USGS and other maps. For analysis of remote sensing data, the lab employs both optical and computer equipment, including a zoom transfer scope and a SUN workstation for image processing and GIS applications.

ARC/INFO
The College of Architecture and Urban Planning has the ARC/INFO geographic information software system running on a unix work station. It provides a vast array of techniques for the research and geographic educational activities in which the Department of Urban Design and Planning is involved. The system is used by many planning-related agencies in the Northwest to handle geographic data including administrative boundaries, property census, land use, and natural resource information. Land suitability/capability studies and other statistical area mapping studies can be effectively carried out with the ARC/INFO system as part of the Department's special emphases in land use, design, and development.

Computer Facilities
The College maintains a range of computer facilities, including a number of interactive graphic terminals connected to centrally supported computer systems (VAX and CDC). Both MacIntosh and PC computers are available along with a wide variety of software. The College also operates a RUCAPS architectural CAD system, and a Multimedia lab with high-performance Power Mac workstations including CD-ROM drives, scanners, and a video digitizing system. A SUN Workstation located in the Remote Sensing Applications Lab supports advanced research applications of GIS, remote sensing/image processing, and visual and other simulation modeling.

Library
The University of Washington library system contains over five million volumes, an equal number in microform, several million items in other formats, and more than 50,000 serial titles. The Architecture and Urban Planning Library in Gould Hall is the branch within the University system holding the primary collection of materials on the subjects of architecture, building construction, landscape architecture, and urban design and planning. It includes more than 30,000 books and bound periodicals, 280 currently received serial titles and 5,000 microfilms. Secondary sources are housed in the main library (Suzallo, a five minute walk), Business Administration (Balmer Hall, a ten minute walk), and Engineering (Engineering Library, a ten minute walk).

Visual Resources Collection
This Collection houses slide projectors, screens, overhead projectors, light tables, and a collection of approximately 100,000 images covering architectural, landscape, design and planning, and construction subject matter, supporting the curricular and research needs of the College. New materials for lectures and projects are continually added.

Photography Laboratory
A photography laboratory is provided with studio and darkroom facilities for use by photography classes, design studio classes, special instruction, and independent activity.

Shop
A fully staffed and equipped wood-, plastic-, and metal-working shop provides students with an opportunity to design and build selected projects. The shop is used in conjunction with studio, structures, and materials classes as an instructional facility. Thesis and other individual activity also can be accommodated.

Design Coffee Shop
Gould Hall has its own coffee shop serving coffee, teas, and snacks which is a popular place for impromptu discussions, meetings, and social events.
