College of Architecture & Urban Planning Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate Programs

The University of Washington's College of Architecture and Urban Planning has two certificate programs available to students in the College:

Preservation Planning and Design Program
The Graduate Certificate in Preservation Planning & Design considers the issues involved in the theory and practice of preservation. Students seeking to acquire the specialized planning and design skills needed to actively protect historic districts, buildings and landscapes will find a rich resource in the Graduate Program in Preservation Planning and Design. This 45- to 50-credit interdisciplinary program is available to students accepted for graduate work by the departments of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or Urban Design and Planning. There are two tracks in this program, one for students in architecture and the other for students in landscape architecture and urban planning. The curriculum offered by the thirteen-member faculty, which is drawn from the larger College along with visiting lecturers from the preservation community, provides students with a grounding in the history, theories, methods, and practices of historical preservation planning and design.

Urban Design Program

The Graduate Certificate in Urban Design focuses on the continuous process of shaping our larger physical environment. A collective activity focusing on aesthetic qualities, urban design serves the cognitive, sensory, and functional needs of people as they use and experience their surroundings. The Urban Design Program offers the interdisciplinary education necessary to lead the implementation of this process. It sustains the collaboration of professional graduate programs in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Design and Planning. Its products include the design of large projects or downtown settings, as well as of neighborhoods, small towns, and rural areas.

Real Estate

The Concentration in Real Estate is designed to provide students with a deep foundation and specialized skills to help them launch or enhance professional careers in real estate. It requires a minimum of six real estate courses including three core courses, two electives, and an additional course from the real estate electives or from a list of approved electives. In addition to formal course requirements, students pursuing the Concentration must complete a capstone experience, which may consist of a thesis, depending on the requirements of the program through which they receive their graduate degree. If scheduling permits, students are encouraged to take additional courses drawn from a list of interdisciplinary electives. Students in the MUP program will be required to complete a thesis and must have a real estate faculty member or designee as their chair or as a member of the thesis committee. The Concentration in Real Estate is offered to students across campus to encourage interdisciplinary studies and facilitate collaborative, team-based problem solving in approaching real estate decisions.
