My research and service has been related to the region for almost 40 years. I am actively involved with local economic development efforts and with the State of Washington in the process of implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of the Growth Management Act. I am an economic geographer who has been very much involved with the development of comprehensive plans for King County and Seattle, and who is currently actively involved in efforts to defeat the “property rights initiative” that would effectively gut our land use laws. I have been interested in the role of technology-based industry, cultural industries, and services in the process of regional development. I believe strongly in the integration of basic research with applied research related to urban development.
