Research and Grants
The faculty in the Department has an active involvement in research. Faculty are currently involved in over 14 research grants and contracts that amount approximately $10 million. Much of this research is interdisciplinary, carried out with partners throughout the University. This research makes available research assistantships in the Department for a growing number of students.

Current research includes:

  • Connections between urban design features, non-motorized travel and health outcomes (funds from CDC and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation)
  • Urban and regional modeling (funded by NSF and local governments)
  • Effectiveness of techniques to manage growth, such as TODs, and program and finance infrastructure, such as concurrency (funded by local governments)
  • Innovative distance learning course development for graduate training focused on strategic planning for making infrastructure systems more resilient (funded by the WA National Guard)
