MSRE Admissions Reviews

Admissions Process

Each application for the MSRE is reviewed by the MSRE Admissions Committee. Applications for the MUP Real Estate Specialization are made by a separate committee which makes recommendations to the MUP Committee, which serves as the Department's admissions committee. In light of the interdisicplinary nature of our program and applicants, we will be accepting either the GRE or the GMAT.

The Committee evaluates each application on the basis of

  • applicant's statement of purpose and career goals
  • experience in real estate or related fields
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • transcripts from undergraduate or other higher education institution, and
  • GMAT, GRE and/or TOEFL scores *

* In general, admissions will follow the standard Application for Graduate Study at the UW guidelines.

Admissions Committee

The MSRE Committee includes at the real estate faculty members in the Department of Urban Design and Planning. Committee members review and score these individual items and develop an overall score for the each application.  At the same time, the Committee considers the academic backgrounds and experiences of the pool of candidates to help enhance the interdisciplinary mix of the cohorts admitted to each class. During the admissions review period, the Committee meets regularly.  Each application is reviewed by the Committee as a whole and as part of the cohort group.  Once the pool is compiled, formal action is taken to recommend to the Graduate School that the individual applicants be admitted or denied.  Recommendations to the Graduate School are made as soon as possible after action is taken.  The Graduate School is responsible for formal admission, and notifies the applicant.

Class Size

The MSRE program anticipates some 20 new students per year admitted to the two-year program. The students will function as a cohort group, taking many of the same courses along with students seeking the Specialization or Track. The Graduate School supplies the Real Estate Program with a target figure for the number of admissions which may be offered in a specific term.  Similarly, the Department of URBDP receives a target figure for the incoming class and then makes an allocation of those figures to the Real Estate Specialization. Usually, the Committee must recommend that a number of applicants whose qualifications are suitable be denied admission because that target figure has been reached.  The Committee also may recommend that applicants be denied on the basis of low test scores, poor academic record, inappropriate match in terms of interests or ab lities, or other criteria provided by the Graduate School.
