Program Positioning
The University of Washington's Real Estate Program, through the Department of Urban Design and Planning in the College of Architecture and Planning, offers several formal designations in real estate studies. These new designations build on the long tradition at the UW in which real estate education was an informal area of study. Indeed, several hundred students have completed the three-course sequence of courses that existed prior to 2002, with many more students finishing individual real estate courses over the past several decades. Given this rich tradition, and recognition of a growing need for an innovative, we have designed an interdisciplinary real estate program that can help prepare students for successful and "sustainable" real estate careers. The overarching goal of the program is to train effective and responsible professionals who can help advance the discipline to promote more effective, efficient, economical, and socially responsible real estate decisions.
The UW Real Estate Program recognizes the complex, interdisciplinary nature of real estate and the capital-intensive commitments of resources associated with real estate decisions. The program also recognizes that real estate development decisions are often irretrievable commitments of resources that affect a particular property, and in the aggregate, the neighborhood area and urbanized market in which it is positioned. The need for more comprehensive strategic management of real estate and real estate enterprises is especially important in light of the many competing concerns that are either directly or indirectly affected by real estate decisions. At the same time, there is a need to ensure that regulatory policies and procedures, infrastructure, systems, and capital markets are aligned to avoid excessive or ineffective market intervention that thwarts our ability to accommodate the spatial needs of our society across the full spectrum of space users, producers, and facilitators.
Distinguishing Attributes
The Runstad Center for Real Estate Studies at the University of Washington embraces an interdisciplinary approach to real estate education by integrating students and faculty from the CAUP with other colleges and departments from across campus (e.g., Business School, School of Law, College of Arts & Sciences, College of Forest Resources, College of Engineering, and College of Architecture & Urban Planning) in a coordinated manner. Our approach is distinct in that it seeks to strike a delicate balance between the physical/spatial sides of the discipline with the economic/financial sides of the business. To achieve this level of interdisciplinary engagement, the program will coordinate its teaching, research, and service activities to help foster a greater collaborative environment and cultivate open-minded thinking. Several elements of our program distinguish us from other programs including:
- Interdisciplinary in Nature: Incorporates content related fields in a unified manner and draws and supports students from related disciplines,
- Emphasis on Fundamentals: Addresses supply and demand forces in the spatial market as well as economic and financial forces in the capital market,
- Behavioral Orientation: Recognizes the “people” nature of business with emphasis on “drivers of value” by property type and user to help anticipate how the market will react to various stimuli and concerns,
- Commitment to Ethics and Social Responsibility: Recognition of the irretrievable commitment of resources and a commitment to sustainable, market-based solutions,
- Applied, Industry Focus: Explores real-world issues and focuses on decision-making support,
- Innovative and Technologically Enhanced: Supports “best practices” and innovation by enabling/exploiting technology-enhanced decision-making.
