Circulation: College faculty

35mm slides:

The faculty of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning are the main users of the Collection. In general, CAUP faculty may keep slides for a week while they are teaching with them. 35mm Slides circulate to CAUP faculty with check-out cards. These cards are blue and salmon, alternating colors every other year. Each slide removed from the drawer should have a check-out card put in its place. Slides are returned to the returns bin with your name on it; they do not have to be sorted. The card circulation system was instigated in Autumn 2002 after complaints of missing and misfiled slides. Do not re-file your own returned slides! If you do not have check-out cards with your name printed on them, please ask the Collection staff for assistance in making some cards for you to use immediately. Please ask for the same help when returning your slides if you do not have a designated returns bin.

Faculty are encouraged NOT to...
remove a semester's worth of lecture slides at once
keep slides for long periods in their offices
remove slides from the collection for the duration of a sabbatical
send slides through the mail
use slides for anything other than class-related educational purposes
duplicate slides in any format (analog or digital) without discussing this with the Director beforehand.

If faculty require their students to use 35mm slides for a presentation in class or studio, the faculty member should mention this to the Director at the beginning of the quarter. Faculty should refer potential student users of the Visual Resources Collection to this Web site, or ask for a printed-out version of Collection policies that can be distributed to the students, for information about the hours, location, and policies. Please encourage your students to introduce themselves when they visit, and to prepare themselves beforehand with initial research on their topics.

Digital images

The Director of Visual Resources assigns a user name and password to CAUP faculty upon request. Most faculty already have assigned user names, although the Director is not always aware of new or temporary faculty in the departments. Please contact the Director for a password, or a reminder on what your password is!

CAUP faculty have access to the Archivision Archive, a digital resource of over 22,00 images purchased from a commercial vendor who specializes in Architecture images. The archive was purchased with licensing for use only by College faculty; the UW faculty community at large does not have access to these images.

The Director strongly encourages faculty to use the Collection's high quality, diverse digital images in teaching, as digital images are easier to share, circulate, and maintain!

Note: the oddities of the UW NetID system prevent the VRC from using that system as the log-in sequence, though the Director maintains hope for the future....
