VRC Digital Image Database:

Step-by-step Instructions for first time users

Log into the MDID using the username and password assigned to you.

(Please contact the Visual Resources Collection Director if you need to be reminded of these log on codes. You may also request an individual user name and password by e-mailing the Director.)

This is the announcements page.
Use the menu on the left to navigate through the database.

Click on "My Slideshows" to view slideshows you have created in past sessions.

Click "Search" or "Browse" to explore the collection. Enter search parameters into the fields, or choose search parameters from the pulldown lists provided. To Search individual or multiple collection, use the checkboxes to the left of each collection. Note that
users can remotely access a number of collections, including the UW School of Art slide collection.

The results of your search will appear as a list with catalog information. Click the thumbnails to see a larger image. Mark the "Selected" checkbox to select an image to add to a slideshow.

Browse the collection by field and alphabet.

Once you have selected the images you would like to use in a slideshow, click the "Add selected images to slideshow" in the orange-colored bar near the top of the page (just above the words "Search results" in the example above).

Then you can choose a title for your slideshow. Click the "Create and Add Selected Images" button.

Once you have created a slideshow, it can be viewed in a number of ways. These appear at the bottom of the page in greenish blue: Slideshow viewer, Print view, Flash Cards, and Light table. Your students will appreciate the flash card view when they study your lectures from the website created by the digital image database for your class. Contact the Director to set up a class
password which allows students a low-level access to your lectures on the digital image database (they will not be able to change images or lectures).
Or you can view your slideshow on a "light table" which allows you to move images around within a lecture, add or delete images, and annotate images.

You can also "package" a slideshow created in the digital image database to use offline in the classroom:

Please contact the Director of the Visual Resources Collection, Heather Seneff, with any questions about the MDID. Call at 543-7598, or send email to hs3@u.washington.edu. Any faculty member in the College of Architecture and Urban Planning interested in using the MDID in a class is encouraged to discuss a strategy for doing so.
